Updates to Volume One — 1809
In 1809, Dr. Ephraim McDowell (1771-1830) of Danville, Kentucky — a native of Rockbridge County, Virginia, who had studied medicine privately with Dr. Alexander Humphreys of Staunton, Virginia, and who had attended lectures at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (1793-1794) — was the first person to remove an ovarian tumor successfully.
Dr. McDowell removed the 22.5-lb. ovarian tumor in about 25 minutes from Jane Todd Crawford on Christmas Day, 1809. She recovered and lived for 32 more years. In 1825, the University of Maryland awarded Dr. McDowell an honorary M.D.
